Summer Intern & New Attorney Research Survival Guide

Tips for new attorneys to smooth their transition from researching as a law student to researching in a professional setting.

Lexis, Westlaw and Bloomberg Access for 2024 Graduates and Summer Interns

Chart notes that Lexis and Bloomberg Law provide summer access for all internships. It notes that Westlaw limits summer use of school passwords to education purposes like classes, law review, and faculty research assistant work. The chart also notes that all three research sites extend access for six months to students after graduation.

* 2024 graduates will receive an extension of access to some of these services:

  • 2024 graduating law students will have unrestricted access to Bloomberg Law® through Nov. 30th, 2024, no registration required.
  • Lexis will extend access to most of its products and features to law grads through Dec. 31st, 2024, no registration required.  Users will see the gift option mentioned in the chart when they sign on after July 1st.
  • West Grad Elite enrollees will receive 60 hours of time on the platform for up to 6 months after graduation. Note, the 6 month clock begins at graduation.

Go to the vendors' sites for extending access:

Westlaw will allow students to use their logins over the Summer for the non-commercial reasons noted below.  If you have such a need, go to the Westlaw site for extending use over the summer found here, Westlaw Password Summer Extension.

  • Summer law school classes
  • Law review and journal work
  • Projects for a professor
  • Moot court research
  • Non-profit work
  • Clinical work
  • Unpaid non-profit public interest internship/externship or pro bono work required for graduation.

* Note the vendor tele-help and chat options in the chart. If contacting a vendor for help, provide the appropriate credentials when prompted.  If you are working on a project for a firm or other law office, provide the Westlaw ID details for your summer employer.
