Virginia Legal Materials

A guide to Virginia legal materials.

Virginia Constitution

The Constitution of Virginia is available online at Virginia’s Legislative Information System. It may also be found in volume one of the Code of Virginia, which can be found in print in the Scalia Law Library on the 2d floor, Range 203, in the Virginia State Materials.

Virginia adopted its first state constitution in 1776. Since then, Virginia has fully revised its constitution six times, with additional adjustments along the way.  Earlier versions of the Constitution of Virginia are available online through the Library of Virginia's website. The current constitution in force is dated 1971, however, it has been amended several times with some language incorporated directly into a section and some remaining as separate amendments.  For more detailed information about different amendments to the Virginia Constitution, including the original text of the amendment, please see the Virginia Amendment Project
